This Nielsen folklore poster appears rather threatening at first glance, but look closer. Take a look at the doomed maiden's serene face. Could it be that she has consulted the wise woman? She looks like a Brave Girl with a Plan to me.
Prince Lindworm is one of my favorite Nordic folktales. You can read it in the 1914 book East of the Sun and West of the Moon, a book of Nordic tales collected by Asbjornsen and Moe and illustrated by Kay Nielsen. This Prince Lindworm illustration comes from a story by the same name.
The caption under the original book illustration reads: "She saw the Lindworm for the first time as he came in and stood by her side ...."
Your fairytale Kay Nielsen poster measures 12" X 16".
